What is alkalinity?
The capacity of an acid to neutralize water is its alkalinity. It is the basis of all titration work. Hydroxyl ions in a sample react with the addition of a standard acid as a result of dissociation or hydrolysis of the solute. Therefore, alkalinity depends on the pH of the point used. What is the use of determining water alkalinity?
Alkalinity is significant in many uses and treatment of natural waters and wastewaters. Since the alkalinity of many surface waters is primarily a function of the carbonate, bicarbonate, and hydroxide content, it is taken as an indication of the concentration of these compounds. The measured values may also include a portion of borates, phosphates, silicates, or other bases, if present. Alkalinity, in excess of the alkali metal concentration, is significant in determining the suitability of water for irrigation. The alkalinity value is used in the interpretation and control of water and wastewater treatment processes.
