In the reverse osmosis (R.O) membrane, a physical process occurs. The raw water, after passing through the initial filters and pre-treatment, is driven by a pump into a shield containing the semipermeable membrane. Finally, exits almost pure water from one side of the membrane and concentrated water of the impurities on the other side.

Membrane consists of several layers wrapped around a central tube. The membrane acts as a filter which the solvent molecules pass through that, but impurity molecules cannot pass through membrane. When the scales are formed on the surface of the membranes, they reduce the outlet water flow or the quality of the outlet water decreases. As a result, after some time the membrane becomes clogged and needs to be cleaned. Acidic or alkaline solutions are used for periodic cleaning of membranes.

Abrizan Industrial Research Company producer of polymeric based antiscalants with a long background in the field of various types of reverse osmosis (R.O) water treatment, have been produced and marketed acidic & alkaline-based solutions for cleaning membranes.
