Neutralization after descaling
Descaling of industrial equipment is done with chemical solutions to remove scale compounds from the surfaces. Descaling solutions are mainly acidic. After descaling, the environment is acidic and neutralization must be performed. Also, as a result of descaling, the surface of the descaled metal is susceptible to reaction with oxidizing agents such as air and moisture. To prevent such problems, after chemical cleaning of the equipment, neutralizing solutions should be used first and then a coating agent. After chemical cleaning with acidic descaling agents, the cleaned steel surface becomes extremely active and susceptible to oxidation, so it requires coating. Coating operations are mostly used for equipment that is to be kept out of service for a long time (more than a week) after descaling, and alloys sensitive to corrosion are used.
Preventing Corrosion with Metal Plating Agents
Plating agents are anodic inhibitors that shift the corrosion potential of a metal sharply in the positive (noble) direction. These inhibitors deactivate the anodic regions on the metal surface by increasing the local current density to a value greater than that required for plating. Plating solutions prevent corrosion by several mechanisms, depending on the type of metal. Coating agents stabilize the coating layer, reduce the rate of corrosion, and if the layer is damaged, they re-coat the metal. They prevent the adsorption of corrosive anions, such as chloride ions, by competitively adsorbing the inhibitor anions. It should be noted that if plating inhibitors are not used in sufficient quantity, they are dangerous, because a metal that is often fully plated has a large cathode-to-anode surface ratio, and all the attack is concentrated in non-plating areas and creates holes.
