Management of corrosion caused by H2S gas in oil and gas industries

Corrosion in the Oil and Gas Industry
Corrosion in various industries, including the oil and gas industry, imposes heavy costs every year for the replacement or repair of equipment and machinery. Annually, 5 percent of the gross national product of countries is wasted due to corrosion, of which about one-fifth occurs in the oil, gas and petrochemical industries.
One type of corrosion in the oil and gas industry is corrosion caused by hydrogen sulfide gas. Many oil and gas facilities are made of carbon steel and are sensitive to corrosion by hydrogen sulfide gas. Hydrogen sulfide causes various types of corrosion in these steels.
Statistics show that about 74 percent of the failures of oil, gas and petrochemical facilities were due to sulfide cracking (Figure below). Therefore, the management of corrosion caused by hydrogen sulfide is of particular importance.

Special Products for the Oil, Gas and Petrochemical Industries
Hydrogen sulfide may be present in oil and gas reservoirs from the very beginning of production or may be produced by bacterial activities (anaerobic bacteria) during operation. In the downstream sector, hydrogen sulfide may also be produced during processing or storage.
Corrosion Management Framework in the Oil and Gas Industries
To successfully manage corrosion, a predetermined implementation framework must be implemented. Implementing effective corrosion management in the oil and gas industries will include the following results:
- It will meet safety, health and environmental objectives.
- Safety and environmental damage caused by leaks and failures will be minimized.
- It will increase the efficiency of the facility.
- It will lead to a reduction in production and maintenance costs.
- It will improve working conditions.
