Corrosion costs and corrosion economics

Corrosion Cost Estimation
Investing in corrosion control is a profitable investment. Corrosion control is valuable when we have the necessary information on the quantitative comparison between the associated value and the total corrosion costs.
In Canada, there are 580,000 kilometers of underground pipelines, which contribute billions of dollars to the Canadian economy. In the United States, there are about two million kilometers of underground natural gas pipelines and 280,000 kilometers of petroleum product pipelines. The cost of replacing and repairing such equipment due to corrosion is billions of dollars.
Failure to pay attention to corrosion problems in any industrial and manufacturing unit results in hidden costs that are impossible to avoid. Economic considerations are essential in any corrosion control method. Of course, there is no need to choose the most expensive corrosion control methods, because the costs incurred may not be economically justified and waste capital.
The first essential step in corrosion economics is to choose an appropriate method in order to minimize costs. These costs can include: production and equipment costs, loss of valuable products, undesirable product appearance, environmental costs, etc.
The importance of statistics in determining corrosion damage
Without access to statistics and information, prioritization and formulation of a comprehensive policy to combat corrosion in order to maintain and protect industrial equipment is not possible. The study of economic and environmental losses due to corrosion will be accurate when we have comprehensive statistics on the volume of corrosion damage to industries. Until accurate statistics on costs in various industrial units are provided, it is not possible to estimate costs, and this causes a high percentage of the country's national income to be lost. Therefore, accurate planning to determine the direct and indirect cost of corrosion seems necessary.
Most experts consider the need for a fundamental move in preparing completely official statistics on corrosion to be necessary and essential, so that the dimensions of corrosion in all industries can be fully determined. Then, by formulating a corrosion prevention strategy, the country's industries can be required to include a series of minimums in the field of corrosion in their management.
